Ayurvedic Immunity Boosting Measures for Self-care During Coronavirus: Ministry of AYUSH

Across the globe, entire humanity is suffering from the COVID-19 outbreak. Coronavirus infects your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Improving the natural mechanism of protection (immunity) of the body plays a significant role in preserving optimum health.

It's well-known saying that "prevention is better than cure". While COVID-19 does not have medicine as of now, it will be good to take preventive measures to boost our immunity in these times.

“Ayurveda has a comprehensive knowledge base for preventive care, derived from the concept of 'Dinacharya' - daily regimes and 'Ritucharya' - seasonal regimes designed to maintain a healthy life. This is a science-based on plants,” reads the release of the Ministry of AYUSH focusing on respiratory health.

Preventive health measures and improvement of immunity with a particular reference to respiratory health are recommended by The Ministry of AYUSH. These measures are supported by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications.

General Measures

  1.  The routine practice of Yogasana, Pranayama and at least 30 minutes of meditation
  2.  Drink warm water throughout the day.  
  3.  Cooking is recommended with spices such as Haldi (turmeric), zeera (cumin), dhaniya     (coriander), and lahsun (garlic).

   Ayurvedic Immunity-Boosting Measures

  1. Take 10gm (1tsp) of Chyawanprash in the morning. Diabetics should take sugar-free Chyawanprash. "To fight against any diseases or foreign bodies you need to have good immunity. Eating a spoon full of Chywanprash every day increases immunity, especially in the lungs and respiratory systems,” said Dr. Chauhan.
  2. A decoction of herbal tea or commonly known as Kadha once or twice a day is suggested. Required ingredients are as follows Tulsi (Basil), Dalchini (Cinnamon), Kalimirch (Black pepper), Shunthi (Dry Ginger), and Munakka (Raisin).
  3. Golden Milk- Half teaspoon Haldi (turmeric) powder in 150 ml of hot milk once or twice a day. Golden milk or Haldi doodh is an age-old secret Indian’s are following. It's something that has been passed down through generations and is now also gaining traction in the West.

   Simple Ayurvedic Procedures

  1. Nasal Application- Apply sesame oil/coconut oil or Ghee in both the nostrils (PratimarshNasya) in the morning as well as in the evening. Even sniffing 2-3 drops is good for the lubrication of nasal passage and throat to strengthen the inner mucus membrane and keep away foreign bodies.
  2. Oil Pulling Therapy-In the mouth, take 1 tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil. Do not drink, just swish in the mouth for 2-3 minutes before spitting it out followed by a warm water rinse. Do this once or twice a day.
   During Dry Cough/ Sore Throat
  1. Steam inhalation with fresh leaves of Pudina (Mint), or Ajwain (Caraway seeds) may be done once a day.
  2. In case of cough or throat irritation, Lavang (Clove) powder mixed with natural sugar/honey may be taken 2-3 times a day.
  3. In general, these measures treat normal dry cough and sore throat. However, if those symptoms continue, it is best to speak with physicians.
